Tim Ferriss' "The 4-Hour Workweek" received a lot of attention from me. How could it not? It is over 300 pages and provides details on how to maximize your output, help others and still enjoy life. But if you did not enjoy these last four blogs on the book, well I have good news to share. They are over ... well right after this one, last piece, so bare with me.
Nearing the end the book, Tim brings in "the meaning of life" concept. Once you're liberated from the 9-5 work grind, you're going to feel very awkward and start asking yourself questions. Mostly because you're bored, but you will start doubting yourself and asking questions.
The one question of self-doubt I found, particularly, interesting was "is this this as good as it gets? Perhaps I was better off when I was following orders and ignorant of the possibilities. It was easier at least." This one is very profound.
Sure it is always easier taking direction, and following orders, but if you're one of the few people in on this great planet called Earth that has an analytical mind, is that what you really want? If you were blessed with such an extraordinary mind, you have to use it - for the betterment of society.
Imagine if Mark Zuckerberg, after learning about the idea of connecting all Harvard students, he sat back and thought "oh someone else will figure this out," we wouldn't have Facebook today. Without Facebook we also wouldn't have any of the other social media outlets (Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat) and, selfishly, I wouldn't have an outlet to promote all these books. But, thankfully, the thought never crossed Mark's insanely gifted mind - although he did mention to a buddy while at Harvard, "one day someone will connect the entire world,"not evening thinking that someone would be him.
You may think having an analytical mind and never being able to shut your brain off is a curse, but it is really a blessing. You never know what will come out of that brilliant cranium of your's one day. It could be the next big social media platform.
Tim put it best. The true meaning of life is simple, it's about being a service to others. When you can be a service and bring a value to other people, that is what gives life meaning. We, as humans, are social creatures and when we can connect with others to bring them something they need, that's what gives us our greatest pleasure. It's what makes us truly happy as a human race. Everyone working together for one common goal. It's why we love sports so much.
